Foreign Ministry drafts intensive plan of cooperation with NATO for 2011

The Ukrainian Foreign Ministry has drafted an intensive plan of cooperation with NATO for 2011, and this document is currently being agreed with the alliance's members, Head of Ukraine's Mission to NATO Ihor Dolhov said at a meeting of the heads of Ukraine's foreign diplomatic missions on Wednesday.

He expressed confidence that the practical implementation of this plan would be extremely successful. He said that the reason for optimism was the signing by the Ukrainian president of a special decree determining a system for the coordination of Ukraine's relations with NATO. "A commission on the development of partnership with NATO will be created as part of its implementation, and it will be headed by the foreign minister," the Ukrainian diplomat said.

Dolhov said that practical partnership with the alliance was the future of Ukraine. According to him, the year 2010 became an exceptional year in bilateral relations: Ukraine adopted a law on the principles of its domestic and foreign policy and held a NATO summit that determined a new strategy of the organization. The diplomat said that NATO partners "took Ukraine's position on its non-aligned status with understanding."

The head of Ukraine's mission to NATO expressed confidence that a multi-vector foreign policy was a real strategy for the country. In his opinion, this is the only approach that can effectively develop bilateral relations with partners and operate successfully on the international arena.

Dolhov said that Ukraine had taken an active part in building a European security system. At the same time, he noted that "in many respects, the security situation also depends on the improvement of relations between Ukraine and the Russian Federation." In his opinion, if Ukraine declined to declare its non-aligned status and make a step towards the resumption of cooperation with Russia, the security situation would be much worse. UKRINFORM
